Case Study on Strategic Management of Global Companies
Case Study on Strategic Management of Global Companies 1.1 What are the key differences between the two accounts of Hondas entry into the US market? 2The first case is narrated by The Harvard Business School based on the Boston consulting (BCG) Report whereas the second case, An Insiders Account of Hondas Entry into the US Market is a direct narration recorded by Richard Pascale. The BCG report explains on the Honda Company as a matured business and a mix of its competitors in the US. As affirmed in the case; Hondas competitors were Harley-Davidson, BSA, Triumph, Norton, and Moto-Guzzi. Whereas, the second case enlightens how the company initiated from scratch and its journey through the difficult times. Richard Pascales article explains the challenges that the company went through during its commencement, such as difficulty in getting funds; treatment of the motorcycle dealers was discourteous, while in the BCG article no challenges were mentioned. The BCG report emphasizes more on the Hondas in-depth research and development department for instance having more staff; as said in the article, the RD was staffed with 700 designers/engineers, increase in the production level as a result more investment in the RD department. While the second case doesnt explain anything with regard to the research and development since it is taking the business at an initiative level. The BCG report highlights target market in general whereas the second article explains target market in details as said in the case, the company chose Los Angeles as the location whereby their target market consisted of second and third generation of Japanese community. Richard Pascales article clearly identified the companys products offered to the market as stated in the article; the products were 50cc, 125cc, 250cc and 350cc machines while in the first essay explains the general overview of the companys products. 1.2 REFERENCE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY: Herbert Rotters former Goldwing page former Yamaha Virago 1100 page, Personal Homepage, Honda Motorcycle 350 CB [Image] http://www.porzellanpuppen.at/hpbikes/bikeenglish.htm Electronic Source Cover Page Image Greenwich University; Course Work: The Honda Effect, Case Study Scenario. CASE STUDY 2- LAURA ASHLEY 2.1 Map Laura Ashleys stakeholders using a power/interest matrix. 4Stakeholders are individuals, groups or organizations who are affected directly or indirectly by organizations goals, objectives, actions and policies. 5Stakeholder Analysis is a tool used to recognize the stakeholders and investigate their needs as they are the ones who are concerned with the actions taking place within the organization. The aim of this analysis is to identify the stakeholders interests, concerns and manage relationships with them. The method used to access stakeholders is Mendelows Stakeholder Matrix which has two dimensions; Power and Interest with four quadrants.Ã [6]Ã Interest talks about the stakeholders concern towards a project whereas power talks about the control over the project. Interest Minimal Effort people who need to be observed without boring them with unnecessary communication. Keep Informed people who need to be informed sufficiently, talked and make sure that no major issues take place. They can help with the developing the project details. Keep Satisfied people who need to be well satisfied with nothing much that would bore them whilst comprehending of the assignment. Key Player- people who must be associated and satisfied with the efforts made. 7Laura Ashleys stakeholders are Analysts, London Stock Exchange Market, Malayan United Industries (MUI) shareholder Dr. Khoo, Customers, Government and Suppliers. It is essential that the stakeholder management should be conducted so as to know each stakeholders level of power and interest along with their impact on the company. However it is sometimes difficult to locate all companys stakeholders in one frame as in the case of Laura Ashley. Beneath is the table, of the Stakeholder Map showing the strategies that are applied for Laura Ashley. It provides managers a complete knowledge of the business performance. 10Figure 1 Usually when organizations measure performance, it is the financial area that is given more attention while the rest of the aspects are not taken much into consideration. It is therefore important that organizations should pursue in using the balanced scorecard.Ã [11]Ã Below are some of the benefits which the organizations will gain. One of them being a source of direction since it guides the management as well as helps identify what needs to be measured in order to accomplish organizational goals which will in return act as a competitive advantage for the firm. With Balanced Scorecard, firms are able to determine both financial as well as non-financial measures. As said in the case study, the balance scorecard was to combine three new sets of measures with the customary financial ones, embracing the customer, learning and growth, and internal issues such as quality improvement and cost control. Balanced scorecard allows firms to develop as well as expand so as to align new organizational strategies, as said by Mr. Hofmeister in the case study, it gives us better and better alignment (between all operating units) and focuses attention on whats important and on results. Through the balanced scorecard, organizations are able to the compare past experience in order to improve its performance which will help predict what will happen in the future. Although the growth of practicing balanced scorecard is slow, however many organizations have already accepted and are applying it. 3.2 REFERENCE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY: Businessballs.com, Balanced Scorecard; Kaplan and Nortons organizational performance management tool Balance Scorecard [Image] http://www.businessballs.com/balanced_scorecard.htm Papaers4You, Guide on How to write University Essays, Coursework, Assignments and Dissertations: Definition of Balanced Scorecard, 2002-2007, http://university-essays.tripod.com/balanced_scorecard.html Business Knowledge Source, What is a Balanced Scorecard, and what does it have to do with manufacturing? The internal factors include strengths(S) and weaknesses (W) while the external factors include opportunity (O) and threats (T). 14 SWOT ANALYSIS FOR FIAT GROUP AUTOMOBILES: Below is a table showing SWOT Analysis before the year 2004. Strengths weaknesses Fiat offered differentiated products. That is; it provides the market with a variety of cars. The companys hierarchy line was long making it more bureaucratic. Fiat cars were viewed as a quality brand. It lacked well developed core competence lending to ugly and unstylish cars. The company was well reputed. It needed to maintain its debts. Ability of manufacturing small cars. Licensing agreement with Bosch for financial support in exchange with the diesel technology that Fiat had. opportunities Threats Fiat had a chance of wining the market share from rivals. Competition with existing automobile firms. The market is ready to accept the new and stylish cars. Partnership agreement with General Motors for giving it them the right to sell its cars. Risk of employing new members to the Fiat family. Table 1 Below is a table showing SWOT Analysis after the year 2004. Strengths weaknesses Distinctive competence of designing low cost equivalent four-cylinder engine. Limited resources. Using technology by means of computer for simulation. Lack of knowledge with regard to entering new markets. For example the Chinese market. Producing new and stylish car designs. Drop in the market share. Competitive advantage of cutting down time to reach the market. Declined performance of the company since Fiat only sold 2000 cars in china, India and Russia. Fiats cars are exploited to have relative fuel efficiency. It is the first carmaker to put forward diesel engines that met the so-called Euro 5 fuel standards. opportunities Threats Winning the market share. Rivalry of potential new competitors. Expanding product line with new and innovative stylish cars. Rivalry with existing competitors such as VW and PSA Peugeot Citroen. Entering into joint venture for instance, with companies like SAIC (China) and TATA (India). Adverse demographic. For insistence Russian market; is it ready to accept the cars offered to them? Entering new geographic markets such as Brazilian, China, India and Russia. Challenge in controlling quality of the car brand. Fiat cars expect to have lower average emissions than any other competitor due to its fuel efficiency. Risk of employing new members to the Fiat family. Table 2 Comparing SWOT analysis before and after 2004: The company is able to increase its growth by entering new and emergent markets. As said, Fiat is expecting to have its sales from different areas such as outside Western Europe, China, India, Russia and soon overtake Germany. Fiat will also be able to increase sales along with its market share whereas before 2004, its sales were dropped; market share had declined and a lot of debt was to be paid. With introduction of technology, new stylish cars were offered to the market with reducing time at development area so as to start the production as soon as possible. The firm was able to rectify mistakes that it made earlier. For example the licensing agreement with Bosch in exchange with the diesel technology that Fiat had. Below is a table showing a comparison between the two SWOT Analyses. 2004 2008 Sales were dropped, Market share declined and a lot of debt was pending to be paid. Sales along with its market share increased. Fiats core competence had ceased. Developed new competences such as designing low cost equivalent four-cylinder engine, usage of technology, cutting down time to reach the market, relative fuel efficiency, put forward diesel engines. Mistake of licensing with other companies in order to support their finances in exchange with their ability. The firm will not repeat the same mistake of licensing; hence it will protect its competitive advantages. The companys hierarchy line was long making it more bureaucratic. The hierarchy line had become shorter making it less bureaucratic allowing the process to be smooth. Table 3 By 2008, most of the weaknesses had been reduced due to the rearrangement of the organizational system however, at the same time; a lot of improvement has been made. Therefore in order to develop, it is essential that the company takes many risks, as done by the Fiat Group Automobiles, since it is through this, the company has reached where it is now. 4.2 REFERENCE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY: Legendarydevils, Thread: 140 Fiat Cars Wallpapers, Fiat Cars Image http://www.legendarydevils.com/english/2173933-140-fiat-cars-wallpapers.html Quick MBA Knowledge to Power your Business, Strategic Management: Defining SWOT Analysis. http://www.quickmba.com/strategy/swot/ Marketing Teacher Est 2000, Lesson: SWOT Analysis, Definition of SWOT analysis. http://www.marketingteacher.com/Lessons/lesson_swot.htm Greenwich University; Course Work: Fiat: Rebirth of a carmaker, Case Study Scenario. CASE STUDY 5- THE PROFITABILITY OF UK RETAILERS 15 5.1 Use the industry analysis framework to explain the profitability of the main supermarket chains in the UK. Analyzing profitability of any Industry is done through The Five Forces Model that was put forward by Michael Porter. Beneath is a figure of the model. 16Figure 1 17Below is an industrial analysis showing the profitability of the main UK supermarket chains. SUPPLIERS Bargaining power of the suppliers is Low since British firms have command over their suppliers. As said in the case; British firms are more experienced and more skillful in their buying power to extract better terms from suppliers. BUYERS Customers bargaining power is also Low since the supermarket groups have control over them. As said in the case; The UK groups exert massive buying power by utilizing the oligopoly power to impose a higher-than-normal price on their customers. RIVALRY The competition between existing supermarkets is extremely high, due to the fact that there are many groups within this industry which have similar products / services. SUBSTITUTES Threat of substitutes is high as customers can switch to other shops instead of going to the supermarkets since they might be charged with a higher price as compared to other shops providing similar products at a lower price. Secondly, the suppliers could also switch to other firms rather than the British supermarkets due to the buying power exerted by the supermarkets. THREATS OF NEW ENTRANTS With lots of competition, threat of new entrants is relatively high, since the industry is more profitable in UK. At the same time, UK groups have barriers that cause difficulty for new competitors to enter the industry. Some of them being: Application of IT in their logistics, Lower Labor costs and High own-label penetration. Tutors notes on Industrial Analysis: Five Forces Model Service design is one of the key resources that Novotel has, making it valuable. It includes the layout of the hotel allowing the customers to easily access the public spaces such as bars and restaurants. Distribution systems are attained by good relationships with distributors. Novotel has achieved to operate in both individual and corporate business as well as leisure markets. Firm infrastructure and Procurement Novotels relationships with partners develop a strong bond creating a valuable asset to the organization. Its efficiency allows delivering both economies of scale and scope making it rare and difficult to imitate. Staff retention is the most essential resource required in this industry. To retain and motivate, is a challenge Novotel was competent to do, thus reducing staff turnover through staff exchanges resulting to value creation. Standardization in all the locations worldwide is another benefit that Novotel has; allowing the staff to understand basic functions. This technique is valued and rare. Novotels Multi-skilled staff creates an exceptional resource and is most valued. The skills given to them during the training makes them capable of doing multiple tasks. Most of the capabilities conclude to be temporary competitive, since the industry is such that many competitors can imitate most of the capabilities and resources that the Novotel hotel has, directly or indirectly. Hence Novotels most sustainable competitive advantages are obtaining and retaining its multi-skilled staff that can work flexibly as well as having good relationships with suppliers. The clock is compared in terms of Perceived Price and Perceived Benefit or Added Value as shown below. By using the strategic clock, Levis business environment is positioned to be in the fourth category which is the Differentiation. This is because; Levis offers a variety of products that have added value as well as a premium price slightly higher than the normal in order to satisfy the consumers needs. Levis products have Quality, Brand Image and Product Design and as a result creates Price premium, Customer Loyalty, giving the company a competitive advantage against its competitors. Due to Levis brand recognition and loyalty, its price offered is also slightly higher than its rivals therefore prevents itself from entering the price-based competition. As said in the case; Due to brand recognition and loyalty they did not enter into price based competition thus controlling reasonable price premium Levis also provides a wide range of products such as pants, shorts, skirts, jackets, and outwear. As said in the case; while blue jeans remain the companys mainstay, the San Francisco based company also sells pants made of corduroy, twill and various other fabrics as well as shorts, skirts, jackets, and outwear. With a premium price, along with its strong brand name, Levis has been able to position itself in the differentiation category, resulting into value-added products, hence gaining higher profit margins. 7.2 REFERENCE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY: Feed the Interns A Daily Bite, Thursday, August 12th, 2010, Levis arent just for dads anymore?; Levis Logo [Image] http://feedtheinternsblog.blogspot.com/ Electronic Source Cover Page Image Dagmar Recklies, April 2001, Literature by: David Faulkner and Cliff Bowman, The Management.de The Essence of Competitive Strategy, The Strategic Clock Strategies on the basis of price and value: Differentiation strategy. http://www.themanagement.de/ressources/Strategy%20Clock.htm Strategy Explorers, Bases of Competitive Advantage: The Strategy Clock http://www.strategyexplorers.com/whitepapers/Do-you-have-a-competitive-strategy.pdf Zanthus Corp. 2007; Business Strategy Bowman, C. and Faulkner, D.; Competitive and Corporate Strategy; Irwin; 1996 Bowman Strategy Clock http://www.zanthus.com/databank/strategy/business_strategy.php?aspr Greenwich University; Course Work: The Levis Personal Pair Proposal Case Study Scenario. If so how? 24According to Johnson et al, Corporate parenting is the level of management above that of the business units, and therefore without direct interaction with buyers and competitors. (Johnson et al, 2009, p.172). Below are some of the areas through which the Virgin Group corporate parent adds value to its businesses. First the corporate parent has added value in establishing a strong brand name such as being a consumers champion through which barriers to entry could be overcome. Virgin is a reputed and well known brand in the market, thus enabling it to expand itself in static markets. In addition, the Virgin Group has a good resource management team. Branson together with his expertise and experienced team, review business proposals every week, out of which, appropriate prospects that match with the Virgin brand are then discussed. This enables Virgin to identify industries as well as institutionalized markets in which to enter. Moreover, the corporate parent assists in reducing organizational risks by entering into many joint ventures. Through these ventures Virgin, is able to penetrate new or untapped feasible markets allowing it attain low costs as well as expansion. Furthermore, Virgin Groups management style and leadership system is decentralized providing its managers with flexibility in decision making. Branson is mostly involved when it comes to marketing and promotion. In terms of innovation, the brand name itself tends to invite like minded partners to venture new markets thus allowing innovation and differentiation. Indeed, Virgin Group as a corporate parent adds value to its business by always trying to venture untapped markets and manage the business in a liberal way. 25As said by Andrew Campbell et al, Fit between a parent and its businesses is a two-edged sword: a good fit can create value: a bad one can destroy it. It is divided into four quadrants namely; Market penetration, Market development, Product development and Diversification.Ã [29]Ã Below are the growth strategies used by the easyGroup. Existing Products New Products Existing Markets Market Penetration Product Development New Markets Market Development Diversification easyGroup penetrates its market by providing best services at low price thus attaining customer satisfaction and loyalty. As a result, companys market share increases. . For example, easyJet provides its customers with affordable services through various strategic campaigns and promotions. Additionally, easyCar rents brand new A-Class Mercedes cars at a lower price reflecting easyGroups brand. It has also established pick-up and drop-off areas nearer to the car parks by means of mobile vans. Moreover, easyGroup develops its products by either modifying or getting into new businesses within the same market. For example, the group expanded easyinternetcafe services by setting up smaller Points of Presence (PoP), within existing enterprises, example McDonalds, Burger King, and Subway. Furthermore, easyGroups market development involves offering existing products to new markets. The easyGroup is planning to extend its easyinternetcafe through franchising involving store establishment, local marketing and store maintenance as well as entering into international markets such as in US. For the case of easyCar, the group aims to expand its sites from 50 to 80. easyGroups diversification strategy enables it to increase its scope, by providing new markets with new services not only in the airline industry but also in other industries. For example easyGroup launched new ventures such as the easyCar, easyValue as well as easyMoney, and is now planning to enter into the cinema industry. Thus, the company experiences unrelated diversification strategy. 9.2 REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY: easy.com more value for less, The portal site for all easyGroup companies, easyGroup logo [Image] http://www.easy.com/ Quick MBA Knowledge to Power your Business, Strategic Management; Ansoff Matrix Definition of Ansoff Matrix. http://www.quickmba.com/strategy/matrix/ansoff/ Marketing Teacher, Est 2000, Ansoff Matrix Planning for Growth; Definition of Ansoff Matrix http://www.marketingteacher.com/Lessons/lesson_ansoff.htm tutor2u, Ansoff product/ market matrix; Definition of Ansoff Matrix http://tutor2u.net/business/strategy/ansoff_matrix.htm university essays tripod, Guide to write university essays, course works, assignments and dissertation: Ansoff Analysis; http://university-essays.tripod.com/ansoff_analysis.html Custom essays from Degree Essays; Business Essays Easy Group Study, Strategic Direction Ansoff Matrix of easygroup http://www.degree-essays.com/essays/businessessays/easy-group-study.php Greenwich University; Course Work: Extending the easy Business Model, Ca

Public Health Reflective Journal Health And Social Care Essay
Public Health Reflective Journal Health And Social Care Essay Our discussion last Thursday and Friday focused on the Impact of Disease on Health Care Delivery System and Health Social Care. During that time our tutor Kate gave us an activity which we will cite examples have disease affected those areas of health. Things like Financial Issues, Supply and Demands, Lack of Awareness and Knowledge, Skills Shortage and Poor compliance are the cited problems in all groups that occur in a community who are affected with any kinds of disease. We come up this idea of some reasons. Why Financial Issues? Because medicines and manpower are not free which means it needs funding to cope this problem especially when a large portion of individuals who are needed to be rendered with health services. Supply and Demands, still related to financial issues. Lack of Awareness and Knowledge, this contributes the problem because if a community is lack of awareness or knowledge about it health they are very vulnerable to illnesses or diseases. Skills Shortage this pertains to the members of health care system, it talks about how effective are they in rendering their services, are they professional and skilled to give services in an efficient and effective way Another topic we also considered last week was about case study of Philip, that study is very meaningful to us because its talks about Philips health and family problem. That case study gives us information that Health awareness is vital to a human life and we should take care of ourselves. It also gives ideas to health practitioner on how to manage a case that has crucial situation and needs immediate attention. Has this new knowledge changed my understanding? ( have I developed a whole new way of seeing things): Knowing about the topic we tackled last week enlightened my mind on the importance of caring ourselves and a community as a health practitioner. Hearing those facts make me think that we should take care ourselves in many ways like having enough knowledge in health promotion and disease prevention, regular check up to assess our health status whether we are having illness or not, having healthy habit, diet and lifestyle. On the other hand also as a health care provider it is our responsibility to provide health teaching on those individuals we know that needs it or even not because doing this promotes health and gives knowledge to them on avoiding any disease problems. In addition, we should be a role model of health to them because this is one of the effective way were they will believe our health teachings and apply it to their selves. How will I apply this knowledge and understanding in my work situation? In my situation, there are many cases where I can apply this facts and knowledge I gathered in our last weeks discussion. As we know, we can encounter different case of diseases in care homes both communicable and non-communicable disease and we are aware that were susceptible to have that diseases if we are not aware of it. Due to this point, precautions necessary to prevent getting and spread of one disease to another and we can do it by applying the things we discussed about public health in our workplace. In order to avoid ourselves and others from getting any disease we must maintain doing the basic things like hand washing after toileting/diapering, before preparing or eating food, after covering a sneeze or cough, after blowing the nose, before and after treating a sore or wound. Using of proper protective clothing as a first line of defence. 2.) Submitted: 28th of Jan. 2010 Learning a new topic leads to changes in our knowledge and understanding and should also lead to changes in ways of working. Identify any new knowledge, facts or theories that I have learnt from this weeks teaching: Last week, We discussed all the things that are related about public health and itself. I found out that public health is a very broad topic and correlates many components such as health sector, health organisations, etc. I learned that Public Health is vital in helping people to be aware about their health because it promotes good health, prolongs life and prevents society in getting any kind of diseases. It is also a gathered deed for the health of the certain population. In dissemination of all the information related to health, there are agencies that are responsible in data distribution. This agencies and sectors are the one who takes the promotion, prevention, planning, action, and implementation of all the goals in regarding health information dissemination. One of the most common agencies here in United Kingdom is the National Health Service or commonly called NHS. This agency acts as a framework of local organisations responsible for the healthcare of the community and to work with the local community to improve our populations health and well being. There are more agencies that acts or has a role like the NHS in relation to Public Health. On the other hand Health Organisation has a big role in terms of promoting people in health awareness of the community because they are the one who distribute the health information globally such as World Health Organisation. WHO is the organisation that coordinates and directs for health within the United Nations. WHO leads in providing information about global health matters. Every time there is a new case of disease they are the one that conducts the studies on it and share the information all over the globe. For example, last week we had disserted the topic about the different infectious disease ( Swine Flu, Salmonella, HIV/AIDS, Measles, Meningitis, Tuberculosis , and MRSA ) and Non-infectious Disease ( Cancer, Coronary Heart Disease, Cerebro-Vascular Accident, Obesity, Asthma ) which are the products of the studios of WHO. Without WHO we cant gain access or unknowledgeable about these diseases. Match criteria Has this new knowledge changed my understanding? (have I developed a whole new way of seeing things) The topic we discussed doesnt change my understanding about Public Health. The lesson we take up last week adds information about what I know in public health and it makes me understand that it is very important in building healthy community not only in a certain place but globally. It also reminds me that as a health practitioner, we have also the responsibility to share what we have learned about promoting health and preventing diseases. Through this way we can help achieved one of the Public Health goal, which is the Health Awareness. How will I apply this new knowledge and understanding in my work situation? Like what I have said before, we can apply this knowledge by sharing the information about public health and telling them how to prevent diseases. In my situation as an Health Care Assistant in a Care Home, I can share what I have learned by telling to all my colleagues the importance of using protective clothes whilst giving care to a service user and explaining them how to make care a service user who has infectious and non-infectious disease. INTRODUCTION In this assignment, for Part 1, I am going to cite two agencies and named their roles in Public Health in terms of identifying level of health and disease in communities. I will name also epidemiology of two diseases and investigate a chart or graphical form of its incident rate. On other hand I will show the Statistical Data of the two diseases and interpret it base on facts and my understanding. In every agency I will choose two different approaches and strategies in controlling disease and investigate its effectiveness and after that I will make surveillance on how it improves Public Health. In this activity too I need to inspect current priorities to the provision of one disease and gives example on how it relates between prevalence rate, its causes and the requirements for health and social care services. Explore In Part 2, I will do a case study on a given data or on a workplace experience. Analyse its critical factors that affects individuals health then after I am going to put its priorities and evaluate its effectiveness to individuals well being. I will proposed as well changes that can improve its health and set it in action like having implementing campaigns to encourage maximize their health. In this part, I will explain the role of 2 different agencies in identifying levels of health and disease in communities PUBLIC HEALTH It is improving and safeguarding well-being. Public Health is in charge for health safety, health enhancement and health inequalities issues in England. It is responsible moreover for shaping policy, allocating resources, co-ordinating actions and supervising progress. Diagnose and investigate health hazards and health problems in the society. Assess accessibility, effectiveness, and quality of personal and population-based health services. In addition they are the one organised community efforts in aiming prevention of disease and promotion of health. In relation of this, I select two agencies that will partake the goals of public health. There are many agencies that have important roles in the society. I chose two agencies which helps contribute health awareness and protection for any kind of diseases; it is the Department of Health (DOH) and National Health Services (NHS). I will precisely relate this two agency to the two diseases I chose which is the Meningitis and Cerebrovascular Accident. Department of Health has many roles for the society. This agency focuses on issues related to the general health of the citizenry. It also compiles statistics about health issues of their area. It assesses and assures risk management to human health from the environment properly. Promote and protect the health and wellness of the people within the society and community. Promote and protects the public health to prevent disease and illness. Provides research and information for the detection, reporting, prevention, and control of any diseases or health hazard that the department considers to be dangerous that likely affects the public health. Establish a uniform public health program throughout the community which includes continuous service, employment of qualified employees, and a basic program of disease control, vital and health statistics, sanitation, public health nursing, and other preventive heath programs necessary or desirable for the protection of public health. Gather and disseminate information on causes of injury, sickness, death, and disability and the risk factors that contribute to the causes of injury, sickness, death, and disability within the society for their awareness. Implement programs and campaigns necessary or desirable for the promotion or protection of the public health to reduce and control the disease. DOH develops strategic approaches for current health risks. Establish risk analysis framework and maintenance of risk standards. http://www.le.utah.gov/interim/2005/pdf/00000306 National Health Services is a publicly funded healthcare systems in United Kingdom, this agency focus on maintaining peoples health and well-being. This agency is responsible for delivering quality and effective health service to humanity. They also contribute fair access to everyone in relation to peoples need. They are responsible for making payments to independent primary care contractors such as GPs, dentists, opticians and pharmacists in rendering their services to all people who needs it. It provides different caring services such as Emergency Respite Care, where care is provided if an individual; are unable to fulfil your caring responsibilities due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness.à Domiciliary Care, where somebody comes into your home and takes over some of your responsibilities for a few hours.à Day care centre, where the person you care for spends time at a centre whilst you have a few spare hours to yourself. There are more services rendered by the NHS whi ch develop societies health http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/36D1CF8D85714DBECA25720D001F6860/$File/quaat3.pdf http://www.archive.official-documents.co.uk/document/doh/newnhs/wpaper8.htm In this part, I will investigate the epidemiology of two diseases in graph format and show my understanding and interpretation of the given data: Meningitis is an infection of the meninges, protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Infection can cause the meningesà to become inflamed and swell, which can damage the nerves and brain. This can cause symptoms such as a severe headache, vomiting, high fever, stiff neck and sensitivity to light. Many people (but not all) also develop a distinctive skin rash. Symptoms can differ in young children and babies. See the symptoms section for more information. Meningitis can be caused by: bacteria, such as streptococcus pneumoniae, the bacteria also responsible for pneumonia, which usually live harmlessly in your mouth and throat, and viruses, such as the herpes simplex virus. Viral meningitis Viral meningitis is the most common and less serious type of meningitis. There are approximately 3,000 cases of viral meningitis reported in England and Wales every year, but experts believe the true number is much higher. This is because in many cases of viral meningitis the symptoms are so mild that they can often be mistaken for flu. Viral meningitis is most common in young children and babies, especially in babies less than one year old. Viral meningitis usually gets better by itself within a couple of weeks, without the need for specific treatment. Bacterial meningitis Bacterial meningitis is extremely serious and should be treated as a medical emergency. If the bacterial infection is left untreated, it can cause severe damage to the brain and infect the blood (septicaemia), leading to death. Treatment requires a transfer to an intensive care unit so the bodys functions can be supported whilst antibiotics are used to fight the infection. There are approximately 2,000 cases of bacterial meningitis in England and Wales every year. The number of cases has dropped sharply in recent years due to a successful vaccination programme that protects against many of the bacteria that can cause meningitis. The treatment for bacterial meningitis has improved greatly. Several decades ago, almost all people with bacterial meningitis would die, even if they received prompt treatment. Now deaths occur inà one in 10 cases, usually as a result of a delay in treatment. Bacterial meningitis is most common in children and babies under the age of three, and in teenagers and young people aged 15-24. The best way to prevent meningitis is to ensure that your familys vaccinations are up to date. Stroke (cerebrovascular accident) A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is disturbed in some way. As a result, brain cells are starved of oxygen. This causes some cells to die and leaves other cells damaged. Types of stroke Most strokes happen when a blood clot blocks one of the arteries (blood vessels) that carries blood to the brain. This type of stroke is called an ischaemic stroke. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke is a short-term stroke that lasts for less than 24 hours. The oxygen supply to the brain is quickly restored and symptoms disappear. A transient stroke needs prompt medical attention because it indicates a serious risk of a major stroke. Cerebral thrombosis is when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in an artery that supplies blood to the brain. Blood vessels that are furred up with fatty deposits (atheroma) make a blockage more likely. The clot prevents blood flowing to the brain and cells are starved of oxygen. Cerebral embolism is a blood clot that forms elsewhere in the body before travelling through the blood vessels and lodging in the brain. In the brain, it starve cells of oxygen. An irregular heartbeat or recent heart attack may make you prone to forming blood clots. Cerebral haemorrhage is when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain and bleeds (haemorrhages). With a haemorrhage, blood seeps into the brain tissue and causes extra damage. (2009) (Meningitis). Available from http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Meningitis/Pages/Introduction.aspx. As we have seen in the figure, the case reduces every year especially to those who have taken the vaccine. It also shows the successful phased introduction of the meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine (MCC) in 1999 into the National Immunisation Programme in the UK. This graph tells also that the immunity to Meningitis C has been identified in age groups who have not been vaccinated, as bacterium carriage rates are reduced across the population. We can see also in this table that those who didnt take meningococcal vaccine were greatly affective by Meningitis. Source: NOIDS England Wales Final Midi Report for 2005 (Table 3 Final totals for 2005 by sex and age-group) Prevalence of Bacterial Meningitis and Septicaemia by Age Group In this table, we could conclude that ages under 1-4 years old was greatly affected by meningitis as we have seen in the peaks of the graph and 0-11 months was greatly affected by the Pneumococcal and Meningococcal disease. And the same peaks in the number of notifications for the under 4 years and 15-24 age groups can also be seen with meningococcal septicaemia. Source: NOIDS England Wales Final Midi Report for 2005 (Table 3 Final totals for 2005 by sex and age-group) Prevalence of Bacterial Meningitis (without Septicaemia) by Age Group This graph shows the high number of notifications of meningococcal and pneumococcal meningitis (without septicaemia) in England and Wales. Observing this graph will note us that the cases in 2005, age group that is 1 year of age are greatly affected with Meningococcal Meningitis and Pneumococcal Meningitis and 15 to 24 years of age were averagely affected with the certain disease. It also illustrates us that among the group cases under 1 year of age gets the highest peak in having Pneumococcal disease. It is also interesting to note that the pneumococcal meningitis peaks again in the older age groups (45-64 and 65+). Top of Form Bottom of Form This graph shows all the percentages of all six categories are experiencing stroke. Figures for males are in dark gray bars and data for females are in light gray bars, with the number of patients in each age category shown above each bar. All data are patients who are experiencing stroke or CVA. As we observed in the graph the age group from 30 to This illustration shows the Incidence Rate of stroke in United States and United Kingdom. Details are articulated as person per year having stroke in 7 age categories. Individual experiencing strokes, person-years of follow-up was defined as the number of years from birth to the date for first recorded stroke. For individual without strokes, person-years of follow-up were defined as the last available follow-up date during the natural history period. Stroke incidence rates are revealed in data chart beneath the graph. As you see the data its very clear that a UK male has the highest incidence rates. UK Females, US Males and US Females are mostly like has the same incidence rate in occurrence of CVA. In this part, I will choose at least two approaches and strategies that control the incidence of one disease and analyse its effectiveness: As prevention of these diseases and to decrease its rate Department of Health and National Health Services make strategies and campaign to attain their goals. Department of Health formulate the Meningitis C Campaign the purpose of the this campaign was to immunise as many as possible of the countrys 15 million young people and children aged under the age of 18 years in as short a time as possible, immunising those most at risk of disease first. Carrying out of the programme was made according to the risk of disease-those at utmost risk being immunised first. In November 1999, National Childhood Programme introduces the routine immunisation of vaccine at the ages of two, three and four months alongside the DTP, Hib and polio vaccines and in December 1999 adolescent that ages 15 and 17 was also immunised. As a result of the campaign there are around 13 million children have immunised during the first year through the help of general practitioners, nurses, immunisation coordinators and many other health professional. This was pursuing by a widespread draw alongside programme to immunise all other children and adolescents up to the age of 18 years in 2000/2001.à After that the vaccine was made accessible to anyone up to 25 years. National Health Services contributed also a meningitis prevention program here in United Kingdom. The Campaign to promote new Vaccine against Meningitis, this program encouraged all parents to immunised their children against pneumococcal disease which is the causative agent of meningitis. General Practitioners has the big role of this campaign because they are the who will catch-up the campaign for the children ages 0 2 years who is starting their immunisations. This program was imposed by Health Minister Dr. Brian Gibbons. He states that: Immunisation is the best way to protect children from serious disease and the routine childhood programme has been extremely effective in achieving this. The changes will further improve the programme and benefit children. This new vaccine will help save lives and prevent hundreds more cases of serious illness such as meningitis and pneumonia. To maximise the defence against Meningitis C and Hib disease NHS made two changes in the routine program. The present three doses of Meningitis C vaccine will be respaced at three and four months of age with a booster shot at 12 months. Most up-to-date proof shows that the protection offered by this vaccine declines one year after vaccination. To maximise the protection in the first two years of life when the risk of infection is high, we will recommend doses at three and four months of age and a booster dose at 12 months. A booster shot of Hib vaccine will be given at 12 months. In 1992 Hib vaccine was introduced and is presently given to children at two, three and four months of age. Since 1999, there was a small but slow increase in the number of cases in older children being reported. Again, because of this Meningitis prevention program, the disease declined over time. There was a Hib booster campaign happened in 2003. This dose was given to older children to maximise their immunity. This upturned the small increase in infections that had started to occur. A booster dose of Hib vaccine is being added to the childhood immunisation programme as a routine at 12 months to extend protection against Hib disease. The new routine vaccination schedule is as follows: 2 months DTaP/IPV/Hib + pneumococcal vaccine 3 months DTaP/IPV/Hib + MenC vaccine 4 months DTaP/IPV/Hib + MenC + pneumococcal vaccine 12 months Hib/Men C 13 months MMR + pneumococcal vaccine DTaP/IPV/Hib is a single injection that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio and Hib. MenC protects against meningitis C Hib/ MenC is a combined vaccine protecting against Hib and Meningitis C (2009)( Campaign to promote new Vaccine against Meningitis ) available from www.immunisation.nhs.uk. [Accessed at February 24, 2010] Due to this campaign the rate of meningococcal infection has fallen every year since, and the cases of laboratory-confirmed group C meningococcal disease across all age groups immunised has go down by 90% since the vaccine was implemented. In 2003/04, there were only 65 cases reported and 8 deaths. There was even a good effect in those who were not immunised with a reduction of about 70%, recommending that the vaccine has had a community protection effect. In fact the campaign has been so successful that meningitis C disease now accounts for less than 10% of meningococcal meningitis cases. Even though the campaign made a great success still the health officials and medical professionals need to remain cautious. (2010) ( Meningitis C Campaign) available from http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk. [Accessed at February 24, 2010] . For Cardiovascular Accident prevention, Department of Health formulated new strategies to fall its rate. They formulated the Stroke: Act F.A.S.T. awareness campaign; F.A.S.T means Face, Arm, Speech, and Time. The Stroke: Act F.A.S.T. awareness campaign aims to teach all health related professionals and the community on the signs of stroke and that prompt emergency treatment can reduce the risk of death and disability. The campaign will notify the community about F.A.S.T. to call 999. F.A.S.T is a simple examination to help people to identify the signs of stroke and be aware of the importance of fast emergency management. Campaign adverts, on Television, radio, internet and flyers, illustrate stroke spreading like fire in the brain to demonstrate that fast emergency action can limit damage and radically raise a persons probability of surviving and of avoiding long-term disability. (2010)( Stroke: Act F.A.S.T. awareness campaign ) available from http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics. [Accessed at February 24, 2010] If Department of Health has its campaign towards CVA, National Health Services provide also a program to lessen its incidence rate; The National Stroke Awareness Campaign. This campaign is related to F.A.S.T were NHS implemented that all paramedics should know how to assess a person using F.A.S.T before sending them to hospital. They also made a Stroke Association who will support this campaign. This kind of charity is exclusively concerned with fighting stroke towards people in all ages. The charity resources research into prevention, treatment, better methods of rehabilitation and facilitates stroke patients and their families directly through its Rehabilitation and Support Services which include Communication Support, Family and Carer Support, information services, welfare grants, publications and leaflets. In this part, I will investigate current priorities and approaches to the provision of heath services for people with one disease: Treating Meningitis is not easy thing to do because this disease has various types, viral and bacterial meningitis. There is no treatment for Viral Meningitis. The immune system, will create antibodies to annihilate the virus. Until it is known that a child has viral, not bacterial meningitis, he or she will be admitted to the hospital. But once the finding of viral meningitis is complete, antibiotics are stopped, and a child who is recuperating satisfactorily will be sent home. Simply acetaminophen must be given to lessen fevers. Clear fluids and a bland diet including preferred foods should be offered. During recovery, a child desires rest in a gloomy, quiet room. Bright lights, noise and guests may irritate a child with meningitis. Increased anxiety on the brain from build-up of fluid in the meninges is a severe problem. (2010)(Viral Meningitis) available from: http://www.healthscout.com. [Accessed at February 24, 2010) For Bacterial Meningitis may prove fatal within hours. Patients with suspected acute bacterial meningitis should be immediately admitted to the hospital and assessed for whether LP (lichen planus) is clinically safe. Antimicrobials should be given quickly. If LP is late because a CT scan is essential, antibiotic action should be started before the scan and after blood samples have been attained for culture. When the exact organism is recognized and results of susceptibilities are known, treatment can be customized accordingly. After the diagnosis has been confirmed (generally within 12-48 hours of admission to the hospital), the patients antimicrobial therapy can be modified according to the causative organism and its susceptibilities. Supportive therapy, such as fluid replacement, should be continued. Dexamethasone should be continued for Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitides. S pneumoniae (duration of therapy 10-14 days) Penicillin susceptible (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] Penicillin intermediate (MIC = 0.1-1.0 microgram/mL): cefotaxime or ceftriaxone Penicillin resistant (MIC à ¢Ã¢â¬ °Ã ¥2.0 microgram/mL) or cephalosporin-resistant (MIC à ¢Ã¢â¬ °Ã ¥1.0 microgram/mL): vancomycin AND cefotaxime or ceftriaxone. H influenzae (duration of therapy 10-14 days) Beta-lactamase-negative: ampicillin Beta-lactamase-positive: cefotaxime or ceftriaxone. Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci) (duration of therapy 14-21 days) Gentamicin AND ampicillin or benzylpenicillin. Escherichia coli and other gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae: (duration of therapy 21-28 days) Gentamicin AND cefotaxime or ceftriaxone. Listeria monocytogenes (duration of therapy 21-28 days) Gentamicin AND ampicillin or benzylpenicillin. Staphylococcus aureus (duration of therapy depends on microbiological response of CSF and underlying illness of the patient) Methicillin susceptible: nafcillin or oxacillin Methicillin resistant: vancomycin. Staphylococcus epidermidis (duration of therapy depends on microbiological response of CSF and underlying illness of the patient) Vancomycin. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (duration of therapy 21 days) Ceftazidime and gentamicin. Enterococcus species (duration of therapy 21 days) Ampicillin and gentamicin. Acinetobacter species (duration of therapy 21 days) Gentamicin and meropenem. N meningitides (duration of therapy 5-7 days) Penicillin susceptible (MIC Penicillin intermediate (MIC = 0.1-1.0 microgram/mL): cefotaxime or ceftriaxone. (2010) (Bacterial Meningitis) available from: http://bestpractice.bmj.com. [Accessed February 24, 2010] In this part, I will explain by giving examples, the relationship between the prevalence of one disease, its causes and the requirements for health and social care services: Nowadays United Kingdom is still cautious about Meningitis even though the incidence rate is already decreasing radically. To be safe, health organisation are prioritising women and childrens health. They develop a guideline which suggest about ma

How Does The ?surround-sound? :: essays research papers
How does the ââ¬Å"surround-soundâ⬠technique work? à à à à à Surround Sound which was introduced by Dolby Laboratories Inc to position sound around the audience so that the effects within movies would make them feel as though they were really there. The use of directional sound from different points in the room according to their depth, sharpness and clarity was the main goal. Starting off from a standard called Dolby Stereo, two separate channels were introduced, both left and right, so that other speakers could in turn double-up to provide a multitude of left and right channels all around the audience. The input of a effects channel (later called Surround channel) was implemented so that a sense of ambience and spatiality could be experienced from the audience. This surround channel was positioned behind and to the left and right of the audience provided the sound depth that the audio engineers were looking for. à à à à à This then gave way to a standard, which was known as Dolby Surround, soon followed by Dolby Surround ââ¬â Pro Logic. This standard incorporated the original two channels for sound, but had an in-built decoder so that the surround channel, and also a center channel (positioned to the direct front of the audience) could be played back to enhance this surround feeling. A many number of speakers could be connected up to enhance the feeling associated with the different types of audio sources, and in turn provide more depth and realism to the audio source. à à à à à Dolby Digital was incorporated into the home cinema as well as movie theatres to provide the ultimate audio reproductive source. The use of individual speaker components positioned around the audience comprising of a front left, front right, surround left, surround right, center, and subwoofer speaker were given their own audio input. This was called Dolby Digital 5.

Barriers to Effective Communication for Nurses Essay -- Papers Nurse N
Barriers to Effective Communication Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages between two or more people; this is something that we do all the time. It is important that nurses recognize that communication is the key to good holistic care, as patients need reassurance and information regarding their care. Communication is so much more than just talking to one another. It is how people respond to each other in many different ways (Langs 1983). Some examples of communication are talking, writing, signing, reading and body language, which is suggested, has several elements (Dimbleby and Burton 1992). Communication can be very effective but first it needs to be established, and then maintained. Nurses can do this during an assessment when a patient/client comes into hospital. However, it is argued that barriers to communication can prevent appropriate and effective care being given to patients. Communication can either facilitate the development of a therapeutic relationship or create barriers (Stuart and Sundeen 1995). Because of their diverse nature, communication disorders are difficult to classify (Crystal, 1980). You can discover problems simply by observing an individual. Observation can be used to establish which language is being used, if the client has any hearing difficulties or visual impairments, physical illness or disability, or if there are learning difficulties. Any of these issues could control how well a person is able to communicate with you. Therefore, for the purpose of this piece of work, I have chosen to explore two barriers to communication, and illustrate key points.... ... Ellis, R.B. Gates, R.J. Kenworthy, N. 1995. Bob Marley Musical Influence
Nesta Robert ââ¬Å"Bobâ⬠Marley is known as being the father of reggae music. Bob Marley was the lead singer of the band The Wailers. He spread Jamaican music along with the Rastafari Movement worldwide. Marley brought the mystic power of reggae to the world and is called the Third Worldââ¬â¢s first pop superstar. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, FL of melanoma. Even after his death, Marley remains a global symbol of freedom, peace, and justice, and his songs remain popular worldwide.Bob Marley was born in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, on February 6, 1945. Marley began playing music while he was still in school. When he was ten he moved to Kingston; it was there, in 1962, he recorded his first three songs, ââ¬Å"Judge Notâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Terror,â⬠and ââ¬Å"One Cup of Coffee. â⬠These singles attracted very little attention. In 1963, Marley and a few others formed a ska band ââ¬Å"The Teenagers,â⬠which went through many names before finally sett ling at ââ¬Å"The Wailers. â⬠Ska music is a Jamaican interpretation of American R&B, with an accent on the offbeat.Bob, Bunny, and Peter were the core trio of the band. They wrote lyrics that told of the struggles the Jamaican poor experienced. The band gained local following fairly quickly, which lead them to incorporate dub, a reggae style of music with the drums and bass foundation in the forefront, in the 1970s. In early 1972, The Wailers were loaned 4,000 Euros to record a record produced by the London offices of Island Records. ââ¬Å"Catch A Fireâ⬠was met with international media fanfare and a tour in the UK and US ensued.Their second album, ââ¬Å"Burninâ⬠was released in October 1973 and included such hits as ââ¬Å"I Shot the Sheriffâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Get Up Stand Up. â⬠The single ââ¬Å"I Shot the Sheriffâ⬠was one of their most widely known hits. Eric Clapton recorded a cover in 1974 which gained The Wailers a large fan base in the US. Bob Ma rley and The Wailers went on their final tour in 1980 that broke attendance records and sold out such venues as Madison Square Garden. Bob Marleyââ¬â¢s final performance was September 23, 1980 at Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, PA.The final album released in Marleyââ¬â¢s lifetime, ââ¬Å"Uprising,â⬠was released in 1980 and made a connection to African-American listeners with the single ââ¬Å"Could You Be Loved,â⬠which fused reggae and disco to give a danceable sound. The Rastafari Movement was a key element in the development of reggae music, and Bob Marley was a member of this culture. Rasta is a spiritual movement that worships the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I. The spiritual use of cannabis and rejecting the western society are key themes upheld by the Rastafari Movement. Reggae music is said to have largely helped spread awareness of Rasta worldwide.Bob Marley was a key component in doing so. Marley is also known for having dreadlocks, which is a Rasta custom. They uphold that the bible warns against cutting hair; but not every Rasta has dreads, rather every Rasta has love in their heart and that is what sets them apart. Bob Marley was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in July of 1977, under one of his toenails. It was advised that Marley have his toe amputated, but he refused based upon religious beliefs. It was later confirmed this infection was a spreading of already existing cancer in Marleyââ¬â¢s body.He continued touring despite being sick and shortly after the concert at Stanley Theater, became increasingly ill and attempted to fight the cancer using a controversial type of therapy based on avoiding certain substances. After eight months of unsuccessful therapy, Marley was set to return to Jamaica. Marleyââ¬â¢s plane was forced to land in Miami, however, as his vitals worsened. The melanoma had spread to his lungs and brain, causing his death on May 11, 1981. He was 36 years old. Marleyââ¬â¢s last words to his son, Ziggy, were ââ¬Å"Money canââ¬â¢t buy life. ââ¬

Johnny Man: Widening Views
This essay will look at and research a cardinal text ( The Saber Tooth Curriculum ) . It will put out to research and critically reexamine Harold Benjamins renowned sarcasm on the educational and curriculum system of a supposedly Palaeolithic folk. The essay will make statements within the text and associate this to the instruction system of Britain in both an academic and vocational scene. It will look at the educational model for 14 to 19 twelvemonth olds and how this relates to the text in inquiry. The essay focuses on the 14 to 19 models of secondary schools, as this is the field in which I teach in. It will place womb-to-tomb larning through vocational instruction of building and how ââ¬Å" Truly Useful Knowledge â⬠is being used in the Saber Tooth Curriculum and the Construction industry today. The Saber Tooth Curriculum was written against the background of inharmoniousness in America. They had merely come out of the depression as a consequence of roar and flop epoch. Ha rold Benjamin was an educationist who had fought in the Fist World War and became a advocate of educational reform through his anonym J.Abner Peddiwell. The Saber Tooth Curriculum imagines the first educational system that is set up in Palaeolithic period by a tribesman called New-Fist-Hammer-Maker. He had gained his name by like an expert doing a tool that would be highly good to the endurance of himself and his folk, Benjamin, J ( 1971, p7 ) states ; ââ¬ËNew Fist gained his name and considerable local prestigiousness by bring forthing one of these artifacts in a less unsmooth and more utile signifier than any antecedently known to his folk ââ¬Ë . The writer has used New-Fist-Hammer-Maker as the footing of his narrative and the message he is seeking to state. Through his advanced tool doing accomplishments, he is seen as the intellectual of the group, and his thought and thirst for cognition are highlighted in the first transitions of the narrative, Benjamin, H ( 1971, p8 ) states ; ââ¬ËHe began to catch glances of ways in which life might be made better for himself, his household, and his group. By virtuousness of this development, he became a unsafe adult male ââ¬Ë . The beginnings of New-Fists instruction for his kids and folk, evolves around the demand for security, comfort and nutrient. The simple undertaking of feeding his kids, himself and the folk was identified three classs of course of study: fish grabbing with au naturel custodies, woolly Equus caballus clubbing and saber tooth tiger frightening with fire. Through this course of study the kids had learnt the valuable lessons that would give them advantage over their equals. It was non long before the whole folk had learnt the three basicss of the course of study and for a clip they were secure and safe because of the instruction. One could tie in or compare the course of study New-Fist introduced into his folk, to the instruction system of secondary instruction and vocational instruction in today ââ¬Ës universe. The Education Act of 1944 by Winston Churchill ââ¬Ës Conservative Government, heralded free instruction to the multitudes. The course of study would hold involved the three R ââ¬Ës which would hold been Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. By analyzing these basicss pupils were judged to hold been given a good, if non just instruction to come on into a productive life. It is this foundation in Britain ââ¬Ës instruction system that reflects New- Fists course of study of fish catching with au naturel custodies, woolly Equus caballus clubbing and saber tooth tiger frightening with fire. Benjamin, H ( 1971, p12 ) states ; ââ¬ËThe best trained horse-clubbers of the folk went out twenty-four hours after twenty-four hours and employed the most efficient techniques taught in the schools, but twenty-four hours after twenty-four hours they returned unrewarded. A Equus caballus clubbing instruction of the highest type could acquire no consequences when there were no Equus caballuss to club ââ¬Ë . As clip goes by the age old course of study of fish catching with au naturel custodies, woolly Equus caballus clubbing and saber tooth tiger frightening with fire is being called into inquiry because new ways of lasting were needed. The butchery of all the natural resources, biological promotion of a species and the onset ice age, forced the folk to contrive new technological betterments in their endurance accomplishments. As new ways were found to catch fish, traping antelope and capturing bears, the old course of study was sought to be out of day of the month by the bulk of the folk. The groups in the group opposed the seniors and questioned the techniques and learning which were seen to be irrelevant. One could pull analogues with this statement in the past and present instruction system, which has its values in the Thatcher Government of 1979 and the debut of the National Curriculum and all the proficient progresss that have been made since. Prior to the National Curriculum schools were able to learn ââ¬Å" what â⬠and ââ¬Å" how â⬠they wanted. It was an independent clip for instructors and all that were involved in the profession of instruction. The educational model of Britain had non changed since the debut of General Certificate of Education Ordinary degree makings, and the Advanced GCE degree in 1951. It was non until the early 1960 ââ¬Ës that the Certificate of Secondary Educa tion was introduced, as the O ââ¬Ë Levels were deemed to be excessively hard for the bulk of province instruction. The debut of Margaret Thatcher in 1979 can be seen as the major alteration to the educational system in Britain, and the continuance of that subject in Tony Blair ââ¬Ës New Labour in 1997. Thatcher sought to revolutionize the old model of O degrees and present an up to day of the month General Certificate of Education. Harmonizing to Kelly, A ( 1994 ) this new making would integrate all the new technological progresss and give pupils the cognition, accomplishments and abilities to come on into the wider universe of employment and the beginning of womb-to-tomb acquisition. As clip has gone by the purportedly radical making set up under Thatcher, has itself come under oppugning and go the old guard. Tomlinsons Report in 2004 on course of study reform had put frontward a extremist shingle up of the whole making model for 14 to 19 twelvemonth olds. The writer has identified and differentiated vocational preparation and instruction through the senior ââ¬Ës stance on course of study alteration. One could pull analogues with the seniors and the building industry and house edifice because the necessity to construct and build a warm, stable and unafraid environment has been cardinal to our endurance since the beginning of clip, from the dark ages to the in-between ages and to the present twenty-four hours. As one coevals passes the learnt accomplishments from one to the other, cognition is being transferred and in clip expanded. As history progresses the manner in which one constructs their houses will alter with manner, manners and thoughts of the clip. Through this all the accomplishments that are learnt through new thoughts and manners are passed onto the following coevals of skilled craftsman. House edifice and building has been portion of the fiction of society, and the manner in which learners have been taught has evolved f rom that. Knowledge of constructing different ways has ever been fixed but what is ââ¬Å" Truly Useful Knowledge â⬠are of all time altering, depending on the Government enterprises, Sector skills Councils and the policy shapers of the clip. Presently the building industries have undergone a major reconsideration of all their makings and through authorities reform and support, issues have had to accommodate. The writer has brought the statement between instruction and preparation and how one is clearly different from the other, the groups in the folk are reasoning for an inspection and repair of their seemingly out of touch patterns fish catching with au naturel custodies, woolly Equus caballus clubbing and saber tooth tiger frightening with fire. The groups are reasoning for instruction to reflect what is go oning in the outside universe and to maintain up to day of the month with technological progresss. Through the seniors the statement for the course of study is based around societal duties, progressive acquisition and cardinal cognition, Benjamin, H ( 1971, p15 ) states ; ââ¬Å" We do n't learn fish-grabbing to catch fish ; we teach it to develop a generalised legerity which can ne'er to developed by mere preparation. We do n't learn horse-clubbing to club Equus caballuss ; we teach it to develop a generalised strength in the scholar which he can ne'er acquire from so matter-of-fact and specialised a thing as antelope-snaring. We do n't learn tiger-scaring to frighten Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelams ; we teach it for the intent of giving that baronial bravery which carries over into all the personal businesss of life and which can ne'er come from so basal an activity as bear-killing. â⬠The same statements environing the course of study for 14 to 19 old ages olds are still being asked today, with relevancy to the pupil ââ¬Ës abilities to go forth instruction being to the full equipped with the right cognition to come on into employment, preparation and womb-to-tomb acquisition. The writer has used a journalistic manner of composing he writes in a manner that high spots and sensationalises New-Fist-Hammer-Maker ââ¬Ës expertness in doing good hunting tools for illustration Benjamin, J. ( 1971, p7 ) states ; ââ¬ËNew Fist gained his name and considerable local prestigiousness by bring forthing one of these artifacts in a less unsmooth and more utile signifier than any antecedently known to his folk ââ¬Ë . The writer Benjamin has used a scope of affectional and descriptive linguistic communication to depict his narrative of a Palaeolithic tribe.Benjamin, H. ( p7 ) states ; ââ¬ËNew-Fist pushed himself beyond those lengths to the point where thinking was inevitable ââ¬Ë . By puting New- Fist apart from his fellow folk Benjamin, H ( p7 ) states ; ââ¬ËHe would gaze moodily at the flickering fires and inquire about assorted parts of his environment until he eventually got to the point where he became strongly dissatisfied with the accustomed ways of his folk ââ¬Ë . The whole narrative is set in a metaphor for life through instruction and those that administer what is ââ¬Å" Truly Useful Knowledge â⬠. The metaphor used by the folk is that instruction is the foundation for life itself and this can non be replaced by manner, manner, technological progresss and alteration in attitudes. The writer has used a simplistic manner to state the narrative of ââ¬Å" The First Great Education Thinker ââ¬Å" in maintaining with the narrative line itself. He has tried to prosecute all that read it foremost a apparently simple journey about a folk and their beginnings of an instruction system which has undertones of irony, sarcasm and a lingua in cheek attitude, Goodland, J argues ( xxviii,2004 ) that ; ââ¬ËHowever the cardinal defeat expressed satirically by Harold Benjamin in the Saber Tooth Curriculum was caused by the broad spread between the prevailing pattern what was executable ; between the best and poorest patterns ; between the verbal committednesss to instruction and the existent support it received ; between the pressing demand and the response ââ¬Ë . The writer has used dyslogistic words throughout the Saber Tooth Curriculum to cynically state the narrative of New-Fist and his folk. He has stigmatised, mocked and stereotyped the bulk of the folk and those that ab initio go against the new instruction system. In decision the Saber Tooth Curriculum was seeking to place how the universe was altering in its technological progresss. Harold Benjamin was sardonically naming into inquiry, course of study alteration and the different sides that opposed it. Benjamin has used a metaphor for the narrative and how instruction is the beginning of cognition and the necessity to construct on that cognition to convey about alteration and future prosperity. Britain is in a clasp of fiscal instability and the hereafter looks unsure for employment, preparation, instruction and life long larning. Britain and the state are fixing for a general election and the possibility of a alteration of Government looms. The Saber Tooth Curriculum and its satirical statements and arousing inquiries are still apparent in today ââ¬Ës Britain. The Saber Tooth Curriculum poses the thought of cognition as being fixed and ne'er changing and instruction being inactive and unmoveable. This in my position is a romantic and naif position of the universe through rose tinted spectacless. Educational alteration is a positive measure, merely if it is being changed for the good of the people and non by policy shapers or politicians. Bibliography Benjamin, H. Newcastle upon Tyne: Sage Publications This essay sets out to place how the thought of modernism and postmodernism tantrums into the instruction system of Britain. It will seek to detect how instruction foremost began from the enlightenment period in the 19th century up to the present twenty-four hours. This essay will foreground the alterations that have taken topographic point in instruction, and how vocational instruction, and the beginnings of womb-to-tomb acquisition has taken root in todays province instruction system. The beginning of the instruction system in Europe and its ideals and beliefs have stemmed from faith and the church. From the really beginning of the spiritual beliefs, followings and adherents would hold required the cognition and accomplishments to read and follow instructions from the Christian religion. The Gallic revolution in1848 played an of import function in finding the enlightenment and modernistic thoughts. Prior to the Gallic revolution the sovereign, authorities curates, church clergy and the old guard were the most powerful influences on society. The enlightenment undertaking had split from the instructions and beliefs of the church and religion and placed its values in ground, scientific findings, human nature, not spiritual thoughts, free thoughts and rational thought. The enlightenment period would be a revolution of thoughts that emanated from the old thoughts of the in-between ages, and faith and the church being the fount of all cognition. Out of the Enlightenment period Modernity was born towards the terminal of the 19th century and they would hold viewed the universe as scientific, based on cosmopolitan truths, logical thought of cognition and objectiveness. This was a move off from trust on religion to ground merely accepting cognition if their was cogent evidence of a move into modernness Bron, A ( 2002, p42 ) states ; ââ¬ËModernism has, of class, many dimensions but cardinal to its beliefs was the emancipatory potency of peculiar signifiers of cognition. Reason and scientific discipline were to be applied to human personal businesss, every bit good as to the natural universe, replacing God as the premier footing for human improvement and societal advancement ââ¬Ë . Modernity mirrored capitalist economy and the province did non endeavor for instruction of the multitudes to derive societal equality but to do the state prosper economically. The industrial revolution went some manner to alter thoughts about cognition, instruction and preparation as workers were going more skilled and the necessity to read and compose was evident. For the bulk of people, instruction was seen to be for the privileged few, up until the terminal of the Second World War. Education of this clip was based on a three grade system that included Secondary Moderns, Grammar and Technical Schools. The instruction of the bulk of the state was left down to the instructors, pedagogues and caputs of the educational establishment, authorities and curates were non involved in the ââ¬Å" what â⬠and ââ¬Å" how ââ¬Å" to learn kids. The instruction of the clip would hold been based around reading, composing, arithmetic, spiritual instruction and vocational topics like woodwork, needlecraft and metalwork. This would hold reflected a hidebound position of instruction instead than a modernist attack. While the move towards modernness had begun, many schools still remained traditionally based around the church. Kelly, V ( 1994, p24 ) argues ; ââ¬ËIn most societies deliberate efforts are made to utilize the educational system to advance certain sorts of societal and political values- and spiritual values excessively, since it is apparent that the monolithic part of the churches development of instruction Al proviso over the old ages, along with their close engagement in the planning and direction of schools and colleges ââ¬Ë These pupils would non hold left school without a making but may hold been awarded a certification of school accomplishment. As instruction progressed into the 1950 ââ¬Ës The General Certificate of Education Ordinary degree makings and the Advanced GCE degree making were introduced into mainstream instruction. Harmonizing to the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, the Certificate of Secondary Education ( CSE ) was introduced in the 1960 ââ¬Ës to provide for a wider spectrum of pupils. The grounds behind this was that the bulk of pupils were non able to finish the elitist O Levels and A Levels, as the scrutinies and procedures were excessively far making for the ordinary kid. The modernistic attack towards instruction system had non changed since the debut of the 1944 Education Act under Churchill ââ¬Ës Government, until the debut of the Margaret Thatcher Government in 1979. The station modernistic motion has come from a reaction against Modernism. This would hold been reflected in our civilization and, whether that is the humanistic disciplines, literature or architecture, these have stemmed from a feeling of alteration in our society. The first universe has evolved and moved on from the beginnings of capitalist economy and industrialism. Managerialism and the move off from the single instructor keeping power in what they taught their pupils, to the province make up one's minding what should be taught. Technology, whole sale capitalist economy, denationalization, globalization would boom in the station modern universe, which had its roots at the terminal of the Second World War. Harmonizing to Usher, R ( 1996, P2 ) it is really hard to pigeon hole instruction with Postmodernism and goes onto province ; ââ¬ËHistorically, instruction can be seen as the vehicle by which modernness ââ¬Ës ââ¬Ëgrand narrations ââ¬Ë , the enlightenment ideals of important ground, single freedom, advancement and benevolent alteration, are substantiated and realised ââ¬Ë Since the Introduction of Margaret Thatcher and her Conservative party in 1979 they had sought to alter the instruction system in Britain, with the Education Act 1988, a new Curriculum was born. The construction of the old making for primary and secondary schools were deemed to be out of touch. The General Certificate of Education Ordinary degree makings were to be abolished and replaced by The General Certificate of Secondary Education, Usher, R ( 1996, p25 ) states ; ââ¬ËEducation is itself traveling through profound alterations in footings of intents, contents and methods, alterations are themselves an facet of the uncertainnesss of the postmodern minute ââ¬Ë . And goes on to province ; ââ¬ËThus postmodernism becomes portion of the course of study, incorporated into the modern pattern of instruction ââ¬Ë . The National Curriculum had put the Government at the head of educational development. It had moved policy devising and educational alteration into a centrally planned system. The National Curriculum had identified that pupils would be broken down into cardinal phases, so that they could analyze the patterned advance and attainment marks from each cardinal phase, from an appraisal defined by the authorities. Another cardinal alteration was the distinction of topics into nucleus and foundation topics. The nucleus topics would be based around Mathematics, English and Sciences and Kelly, V ( 1994, p24 ) argues ; ââ¬ËThus English has to come known more frequently as ââ¬Ë linguistic communication ââ¬Ë , as instructors have come to concentrate on the development of the students ability to utilize linguistic communication for thought and for speaking every bit good as for authorship, and, in the procedure of this alteration, there has been some loss of accent on grammatical constructions, on punctuation and, in general, on the mechanics of the English linguistic communication ââ¬Ë . The Governments concluding to alter the course of study, was to maintain in line with the postmodern universe and its rivals. Harmonizing to Kelly, A ( 1994 ) the demand to educate and develop pupils to go portion of society through employment and economic growing was paramount to the ideals of the Government. The beginnings of life long acquisition for 14 to 19 twelvemonth olds can be seen In 2004 by Mike Tomlinson study on the 14-19 reform of instruction which was commissioned by Tony Blair ââ¬Ës Labour Party following on from his ââ¬Å" Education, Education, Education â⬠rhetoric. The proposed alteration of course of study is really much centred on immature pupils going grownups within the making model, therefore seting them on the first measure of life long larning. The alteration in ideals and aspiration between New Labour and the Conservative Party it had superseded could be seen as an extension of the former government. Mike Tomlinson had advocated a complete shingle up of the current making model of G.C.S.E ââ¬ËS and A Level making. Harmonizing to Tomlinson ( 2004, p4 ) the reform was needed to ; ââ¬ËRaise engagement and accomplishment, strengthen vocational paths, provide greater stretch and challenge, acquire the rudimentss right ( English, maths, ICT ) cut down the appraisal load, and do the system more crystalline and easier to understand ââ¬Ë . Since 2004 Vocational instruction has been introduced into secondary school, constructing people into the universe of work non modernism instruction for instruction interest. The overplus of classs now available to school kids from the age of 14 old ages old, scope from Construction, Horticulture, Catering, Creative Media, Motor Mechanics, Engineering, Hair, Beauty, Outdoor instruction etc. This continuance of the altering face of instruction falls in line with Jarvis ( 2004, p32 ) ; ââ¬ËWith this rapid alteration, it is about impossible to see cognition as a truth any more- we are now speaking about something that is comparative and can be changed once more every bit shortly as some new find is made ââ¬Ë . Although vocational instruction has reached many more pupils in secondary schools Tomlinson ââ¬Ës, sweeping alteration of the making model for 14-19 twelvemonth olds has been watered down and have been partly introduced. In decision the argument and statements environing Modernism and Post Modernism in our society have been ongoing since the debut of the thought. Mod positions replaced the ideals of the church, and cognition being placed into scientific findings and truths as the universe was altering. The thoughts of Modernism and Postmodernism took assorted signifiers in architecture, art, literature and instruction, and it could be argued that postmodernism is merely another signifier of modernism, and one is an extension of the other. As the essay has shown cognition is of all time traveling and altering and the instruction of our society reflects that cultural and ideological motion. Bibliography Bron, A. , Schemmann, M. It will turn up how the school ethos and their long term plans fits into womb-to-tomb acquisition. The essay will foreground the alterations in authorities and how they have affected instruction and place cardinal constabularies within that. The debut of the Conservative authorities under Margaret Thatcher in the 1970 ââ¬Ës changed Britain and its nucleus values in footings of its national industries, instruction and the wellness service. Before the Conservative Government Secondary schools were able to learn its ain course of study and make up one's mind what ââ¬Å" Truly Useful Knowledge â⬠was for their pupils. It was in the epoch of instructors being independent and at the Centre of pupils larning. The course of study of schools from the1950 ââ¬Ës to the1970 à ¢â¬Ës harmonizing to Matheson, D ( 2008 ) , did non hold a common nucleus course of study and was able to take their ain standards for learning. Schools were able to learn what they decided and how they were traveling to learn. Schooling of the 1950 ââ¬Ës and the 1970 ââ¬Ës gave power to instructors in the schoolroom. They could take their ain reading stuff, doctrine and the manner they taught the kids. The Thatcher Government and its political orientations and values had crushed the brotherhoods in its chase of merchandising of Britain ââ¬Ës National industries and interrupting the spirit of all those that stood behind it. The thought of denationalization was introduced under Thatcher ââ¬Ës Conservatives and Education did non get away their implicit in influences, Randle, K argues that ( 2000, pp140 ) ââ¬ËThe New mangerialsim can be characterised as a manner of direction which emerged in the UK in the early 1980 ââ¬Ës and bit by bit distribute throughout the Public Sector. It began with the civil service in the aftermath of the Rayner Scritinities and the Financial Management Initiative ( Metcalf and Richards. 1987 ) and has since been established in local governments, the BBC, the NHS and the Education Sector ââ¬Ë . Prior to Thatcher all secondary schools and farther instruction colleges were under the control of Local Educational Authorities, but Thatcher had given all secondary schools the license to go Masterss of their ain fate if they so desired, and enter into the concern universe of instruction. Secondary Schools were now portion of this new universe of denationalization, marketisation and Thatcherism. Kelly, A ( 1994, p48 ) states ; ââ¬ËIt is possibly deserving observing foremost the commercial imagination that is a characteristic of much of the 1988 Acts back uping certification. We read of the suppliers of instruction, of the ââ¬Ëdelivery ââ¬Ë of the course of study, of ââ¬Ëmachinery ââ¬Ë for carry throughing this and that, of the ââ¬Ëusers ââ¬Ë of the system, of its ââ¬Ëconsumers ââ¬Ë , of our rivals and so on ââ¬Ë . The 1988 Education Reform Act would turn out to be instrumental in both, the manner in which schools and farther instruction colleges were funded. The National Curriculum was introduced into province instruction in 1988 so the Government could determine the patterned advance of all secondary schools in England. The debut of the National Curriculum conference tabular arraies and SATS were shortly to follow. In countries of the state that still have Grammar Schools, Comprehensive and Secondary Moderns viing against each other, the National Curriculum set up under Thatcher would ever be a stumbling block for the under acting schools that would be at the underside of the conference tabular arraies. With the oncoming of Marketisation and Managerialism of instruction, Secondary Schools like The Community College Whitstable would hold to accommodate to the altering values of instruction. Schools have had to alter the set up of their managerial doctrines and go more in melody with the fundss of their establishment. The direction squad at The Community College Whitstable is set up as a concern with the Managing Director at the top or the Head and the Teachers at the underside in what could be described as a Christmas tree formation. The caput will hold their senior direction squad below her, and 2 Deputy Heads and the main Finance Officer as their closest confidantes. From the instructor at the bottom one will hold to see one degree above before he or she can talk to the Head. Through this concatenation of bid the Head instructor will be able to study and supervise the school and how it performs both financially and academically. For schools such as The Community College Whitstable, pulling a steady flow of pupils twelvemonth on twelvemonth is critical as the pupils represent a fiscal addition. The conference tabular arraies are all of import for possible new pupils and the patterned advance up the conference is paramount. Harmonizing to Ofsted Report ( 2000 ) The Commu nity College Whitstable had underperformed academically in 1997, 98, 99, which show that they was in the bottom five per cent of schools. The Oftsed Reports in 2006 and 2009 have non shown much advancement from the early yearss of the transmutation of the Sir William Nottidge to The Community College Whitstable. The grounds for this can be seen in the unjust disadvantage of the choice policy and competition from other schools in the Kent country. Hill, D ( 2001, p12 ) backs up this statement ; ââ¬ËNew Labour policy and discourse on instruction, on schooling in peculiar, shows both continuities and differences with Thatcherism. The major continuities are a scope of low public outgo, denationalization, and the care of a selective, specializer and exclusionary instruction system ââ¬Ë . The outlooks from instructors to execute, educate and train pupils to go through test has non been greater as instructors public presentation degrees are linked into the school ââ¬Å" mangerialism â⬠. Teachers are bound to the schools with annual reappraisals on their public presentation direction, which are centred on the schools aspiration on accomplishment. Through these public presentation direction reviews instructors are assessed and a annual increase of their wage is paid. The 14-19 docket and the present authorities policies and support have had an impact on all secondary schools, they are no longer happy to allow their pupils travel to the local farther instruction colleges or elsewhere. The policy to maintain pupils past the compulsory age, are apparent at The Community College Whitstable, as the figure of station compulsory pupils have risen each twelvemonth, from 11 in 2000 to 117 in 2009. The chance of maintaining pupils station 16 are seen as a must for The Community College Whitstable. The growing of 6th signifier can be seen as instruction for instructions sake, as the consumption of pupils into 6th signifier can be seen as an unfastened door policy for fiscal addition, Evans, K. ( 2000, p126 ) argues ; ââ¬ËCurrently, both the FEFC and TEC support theoretical accounts is target driven. If we add in the force per unit areas on schools to make full their sixth signifiers with pupils who will accomplish and, hence, hike their schools standing in the conference tabular arraies, we can see that, at local degree, the construct of partnership in station 16 instruction and preparation market is non based on lovingness and sharing ââ¬Ë . As one can measure the debut of womb-to-tomb acquisition is really of import to secondary schools, which no longer sees themselves as merely mandatory instruction but establishments of larning. As each pupil represents money and are costed into the budget for the fiscal twelvemonth it is imperative to prolong the pupil Numberss. Not merely are secondary schools viing with other educational establishments they are besides mercantile establishments for outreach Centres such as Learn Direct. The Community College Whitstable has incorporated the Learn Direct into their substructure, which caters for a broad scope of educational classs, either online or as a bead in Centre. These Centres are cardinal for womb-to-tomb propensity or those that do non desire to come in mainstream instruction. Such enterprises are instrumental in the new managerialism and marketisation of secondary schools such as The Community College Whitstable. In decision Marketisation of schools and Further Education are straight linked to the Margaret Thatcher ââ¬Ës Conservative Government of the late 70 ââ¬Ës and early 80 ââ¬Ës. The extremist shingle up of the national establishments from denationalization, and the interruption up of trade brotherhoods and the planetary economic system have had a immense impact on the instruction system. Despite the alteration in Governments, the on-going conflict for the right instruction system is still being sought after. Secondary schools such as The Community College Whitstable have become concerns in instruction in their ain right and will hold to accommodate and continually alteration with the air current of power. Secondary schools will and make play an of import portion in Lifelong Learning as they are the foundations for all our acquisition.
